What are the most typical workplace motivators?

One of the common missteps with leadership and management is when they do not understand or take into consideration the individual workplace motivators of their team and employees. It’s a huge miss to assume that everyone loves fast food / chain restaurant food in the office on Fridays, or that giving employees random and occasional tickets to local sporting events is truly appreciated.

In past teams I’ve been a part of, one of the first things we do together is talk through individual motivators. What does each team member appreciate? How can I - as the leader - best recognize and appreciate them for their skillsets and what they bring to the team and mission?

For some, verbal appreciation is what someone might choose, while another team member may value being asked to co-author the monthly newsletter with their name credited.

Not only does this information help you as the leader understand how to show appreciation to your team, it also helps you as an individual contributor better understand your own internal motivators!
